Tom Shanahan is president of Shanahan Leadership Strategies, Inc. He is a skilled communication, leadership and training educator and coach. Shanahan is also a well-known roofing industry risk management expert.

He graduated from Creighton University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, Northwestern University with a Master of Business Administration degree, and Georgetown University with a graduate certificate in leadership coaching.

He joined the National Roofing Contractors Association staff in 1989 as its first risk manager and retired in 2022 as its Vice President of Enterprise Risk Management and Executive Education. Before NRCA, he worked in the hotel industry for 11 years where he held most positions between room attendant and general manager.

As VP of Executive Education and now as its Executive Director, he leads NRCA's award-wining Future Executives and Executive Management Institutes, held at Northwestern University’s prestigious Kellogg School of Management. Shanahan teaches strategic planning, leadership coaching and risk management courses, and has provided company-specific leadership coaching and strategic planning support to more than 300 roofing contractors. Separately, Shanahan has been hired by Kellogg as guest faculty to teach and coach in its Executive Education leadership program.

Armed with data from a 1999 national Gallup survey revealing foremen wanted and needed leadership and communication skills training, Shanahan created the day-long programs, For Foremen Only 1 and 2, which are still taught today. The popularity of these led to the development of similar programs for senior managers and owners. He has had the privilege of training thousands of these leaders.

As VP of enterprise risk management, he directed its risk, health, safety, regulatory and insurance matters impacting roofing contractors. He represented NRCA to regulatory agencies like EPA, DOT and OSHA where he was the first national trade association safety professional to sit on its Advisory Construction Committee to Occupational Safety and Health (ACCOSH). With the support of his team, he directed, wrote and taught award-winning NRCA health, safety and risk management educational materials and classes. He also oversaw NRCA’s national roofing contractor business and health insurance programs.

During his NRCA career, he also held the positions of VP of NRCA University, executive director of both the National Roofing Legal Resource Center and National Roofing Foundation, and director of NRCA’s international membership and state legislative activities.

Shanahan and his wife, Kathy, have three children and four grandchildren. His outside interests include playing flute—he was a flute performance major at Roosevelt University; and the DIY renovations and repairs of their 100-year-old home.
